Parents and players--it is hard to believe that we are halfway through our spring season already! It is time to turn our attention toward all stars. We have been fielding questions regarding when we will get started, among other things. Much of the process of team selection is spelled out in the competition handbook under Postseason Teams. However, several questions aren't answered. We have put together a list of questions and answers to help you as you consider the great benefits of summer softball.
What are all star teams? All star teams are teams selected from a tryout process, by coaches who have submitted their applications and have been approved and selected by the BGSL Board. As these are tryout teams, there is a possibility that girls are not selected to participate.
Who is eligible to try out? Any girl registered in the current spring season and playing in our league, including girls from our partnering league communities of Tri West and Plainfield. Girls are allowed to try out for either slow pitch or fast pitch teams, or both, if they wish--but may only participate on one team. Any girl attempting to "play up" on a team older than their regular season team MUST petition the Competition Director in writing. The age eligibility for most tournaments is the same as our league age--the girl's age on Jan 1 of this calendar year.
What is the tournament schedule? The schedule for each team is determined by its manager and could be anywhere from 2-6 tournaments on various weekends, depending upon availability. 8U teams and slow pitch teams are required to participate in the tournament we host--which is the USSSA Girls' World Championships on July 24-26.
How much traveling is involved? This will also vary from team to team. Most teams will travel to at least one tournament, and many will travel to 2-3. Depending on age division and which style of play, there may be one day tournaments available that do not necessitate overnight stays, and also local tournaments.
When will practices start? Once teams are formed (teams will form by early June), they are allowed to practice one time per weekend, until the season ending rec tournament is over. Once the rec tournament is over, teams will be allowed to practice as much as they want.
How many teams will be formed? Our process allows for up to 3 teams in any division provided there is coach and player interest. For 2015, we will target 3 teams in 8U, 2 teams in 10U SP, 2 teams in 10U FP, 2 teams in 12U SP, and one team each in 16U SP, 16U FP, and 20U SP. Teams will be added or reduced as interest level dictates.
How much does it cost to play? This will vary from team to team, depending upon the number of tournaments played, which uniforms are purchased, the amount of travel, etc. Many teams will fundraise to help ease the financial impact. The league will collect a nominal participation fee to help offset administrative costs.
When will tryouts be held? We will be announcing tryout dates later this week after meeting with our managers. Tryout dates will vary by division and coach availability.
Please stay tuned for information specific to your division, including exact tryout dates. We will make information available as soon as we have it.
We have finalized the photo and concession schedule. Team photos will occur on May 9 at the BGSL Diamonds. Your concession time will be added to your team's calendar within the next few days. Documents for both are below
